A package design that really missed its mark...

I want to preempt this critique by saying that I really love L'oreal products. In the ever-expanding world of consumer makeup companies, I think that their products are great and their branding is as well. Usually their packaging is...but not in this case. It's not a matter of how it looks...it looks nice...upscale, informational...nice color and font choices. But...try using this container in the shower...which is where one generally uses such a product. It is darned near impossible! Now, admittedly, I have smaller hands than a lot of people, but I would argue that a lot of women...whom this product is geared towards...do as well. Try holding this jar and unscrewing the lid. Which is large at the top...my fingers can barely reach from one side to the other. And, it is tapered...inward. And...your hands are slippery from being wet, because you've already shampooed your hair if you are using this product. I have to use two wash clothes to get this thing open! One to hold the bottom and one to unscrew the top! What I really need in there is one of those rubber grippers that we have in the kitchen to unscrew jar lids. As designers, we are charged with creating lovely, engaging packaging. But...it has to work! I am expecting a package redesign on this product...any day now...

Another package created for my portfolio, based on the Aveda Neo Goth campaign that I created earlier.

A new package for my portfolio, based on the fictional Temptations Winery.
I just got done listening to a webinar by Package Design. It was about digital packaging printing. It was very informative. One of the greatest reasons to use digital printing for packaging is the consumer experience, such as being able to create custom packages like Kleenex has done. Very cool.

A very cool website for packaging designers!

This is an article about a very cool new form of packaging! It is constructed of "a molded-fiber outer shell made from 70% recycled cardboard and 30% old newspapers that can be recycled up to seven times!" The wave of the future...sustainable packaging!

Some very fun cards that I created for a client. I did the photography as well as the design. It was a very enjoyable project!
